Eighteen years after an alleged fake appointment at Kannur University’s Swami Anandatheertha Campus in Payyannur, a university professor has been sentenced to six years’ rigorous imprisonment for creating forged documents and facilitating the alleged misappropriation of university funds shown as salary payments.
The Kannur Vigilance Court on Thursday convicted Dr N.K. Deepak, 54, under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to a total of six years in prison. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 80,000 and granted him bail after pronouncing the sentence.
Deepak, a native of Chirakkal in Kannur, was in charge of the Physics Department at the Swami Anandatheertha Campus when the alleged offence took place.
The case dates back to 2008, when the university registrar issued an order for appointing a professional assistant on a daily-wage basis in the Physics Department.
According to the prosecution, Deepak was entrusted with selecting the professional assistant but allegedly created documents to show that the appointment had been completed, although no such appointment had taken place.
The prosecution alleged that Deepak obtained a copy of the qualification certificate belonging to a friend of another professional assistant working at the campus. He allegedly altered the document by adding a fictitious address and prepared a forged qualification certificate.
The documents were subsequently allegedly used to convince university authorities that a professional assistant had been appointed. University funds were then drawn by showing salary payments to the purported employee, according to the prosecution.
The Kannur Vigilance Unit registered a case against Deepak and filed a charge sheet before the Vigilance Court after completing its investigation.
Vigilance Judge K. Ramakrishnan found Deepak guilty and pronounced the sentence on Thursday.
Deepak is currently listed by Kannur University as a professor and head of its Physics Department at the Swami Anandatheertha Campus.
