Army soldier Shatrudhan Yadav, a resident of Sahuka village in Bihar’s Kaimur district, died on Wednesday evening while undergoing treatment for severe burn injuries sustained in an alleged attack eight days earlier, police said.
Yadav’s death triggered protests in Ramgarh on Thursday, with a large number of villagers demanding stringent action against those responsible and questioning the police handling of the case.
According to preliminary information, Yadav had been called to Ramgarh in connection with a dispute reportedly linked to a financial transaction. It is alleged that he was locked inside a Scorpio vehicle, doused with petrol and set on fire.
Following the incident, Yadav was initially taken to the Trauma Centre in Varanasi in critical condition. He was subsequently referred to an Army hospital in Lucknow, where he died during treatment.
News of his death sparked anger in Sahuka village. Villagers marched towards Ramgarh on Thursday, raising slogans against the police administration and demanding punishment for those responsible.
The protesters blocked the road at Durga Chowk for around five hours, disrupting traffic. Some also gathered near the Ramgarh police station and threatened to lay siege to the premises.
Additional security personnel were deployed at key locations amid the tense situation. The SDM, DSP and other police officials remained at the spot and tried to pacify the protesters.
Kaimur SP Shikhar Chaudhary assured the protesters that stringent action would be taken against anyone found guilty. He also promised an inquiry into the role of the Ramgarh Station House Officer (SHO).
Police said seven people have been named as accused in the case. Three have been arrested and sent to jail, while four others remain absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining accused.
Following the SP’s assurances, the protesters called off their demonstration and traffic movement returned to normal after about five hours.
Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged attack, including the circumstances surrounding the reported financial dispute and the role of each accused.
