Nishu won the 53kg category at the national women’s selection trials on Monday, setting up a final trial against Asian Games-bound Antim Panghal for a place in India’s squad for the Senior World Wrestling Championships.
The trials were held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, where Nishu emerged from a competitive field before defeating Thishka in the final.
Under the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) selection policy, the winners of the trials will get an opportunity to challenge wrestlers already selected for the Asian Games. The winner of each final trial will earn India’s berth in the corresponding weight category for the Senior World Championships, scheduled to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1.
The decisive 53kg trial between Nishu and Antim will be conducted at a later date.
Several other wrestlers also impressed in the women’s categories. Two-time U20 World Champion Kajal won the 76kg category after defeating Siksha, while Simran secured the 57kg title with a narrow victory over Swati Shinde.
Neelam finished first in the 50kg category after overcoming Ankush. Tapsya won the 62kg division by defeating Anjali, while Srishti prevailed over Bipasha to claim the 68kg title.
WFI President Sanjay Singh praised the standard of competition and said the performances reflected the growing depth in Indian women’s wrestling.
“The quality and intensity of the bouts today were encouraging. The wrestlers fought with tremendous determination and showed that there is considerable depth across the weight categories. I congratulate all the winners and look forward to seeing them compete for India on the international stage,” Singh said.
The 53kg category, however, remains the centre of attention, with Nishu’s victory setting up a high-stakes contest against Antim for the World Championships berth.
