Mumbai, September 13, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be implemented in all 21 states currently governed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the 2029 general elections.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai after attending several public programmes, Shah said the UCC had already been introduced in some states and expressed confidence that the remaining NDA-ruled states would also adopt it before 2029.

“We have already introduced the Uniform Civil Code in several states. I am confident that before 2029, we will implement the UCC across all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA,” he said.

Shah also highlighted the Modi government’s approach to national security, saying measures including surgical strikes, airstrikes and Operation Sindoor had demonstrated a policy of “zero tolerance” towards cross-border terrorism.

He said India’s foreign and defence policies were now guided by a strong national-interest framework, with “India First” serving as the government’s strategic principle. Shah also contrasted the current political environment with the period before 2014, claiming that the country had moved away from corruption, casteism and dynastic politics towards performance-based governance.

On illegal immigration, the Home Minister reiterated the Centre’s commitment to identifying and deporting unauthorised foreign nationals. He said the government would systematically identify illegal immigrants and ensure their removal, while declining to disclose the operational methods being considered for the exercise.

On recent tensions surrounding regional language identities, Shah said priority should be given to one’s mother tongue while leaving state-level political leadership to resolve specific linguistic disputes. He also accused political opponents of attempting to create divisions in society over the issue.
