Former Telangana minister Konda Surekha and her husband Konda Murali on Sunday made it clear that they will remain with the Congress party despite her removal from the state Cabinet earlier this month over an alleged disciplinary issue.
Addressing supporters in Warangal in their first public appearance since Surekha was dropped from the Cabinet by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the couple said positions had never been their priority and that they wanted to remain connected with the people.
Surekha said she was not upset about losing the ministerial post but was unhappy with the reason cited for her removal. The action followed the Congress high command taking serious note of her response to a show-cause notice issued after her daughter Konda Sushmitha’s remarks against the Chief Minister.
The MLA also criticised what she described as “politics of opportunism”, recalling her political journey from serving as an MPP to becoming a minister. She also referred to her earlier decision to resign as minister in the interest of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
Surekha alleged that attempts had been made to deny her an electoral ticket. Recalling the 2014 Telangana Assembly polls, she said then TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao had invited her to contest from Warangal East, where she defeated the sitting Congress minister as a TRS candidate.
Surekha joined the Congress in 2018 and won the Warangal East seat on a Congress ticket in 2023.
She said some supporters were planning an agitation over her removal but advised them to respect the high command’s decision. Surekha added that she would not “sit at home” after losing the ministerial post and would continue working among the people, while seeking a majority for the Congress in the forthcoming Warangal Corporation elections.
