The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has confirmed the presence of 173 video files, including alleged obscene and vulgar content, on a mobile phone seized from the prison cell of former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna at Bengaluru Central Prison, police said on Saturday.
The phone was recovered during a search of the Parappana Agrahara prison premises on August 11, following the circulation of a video purportedly showing Revanna using a mobile phone inside the jail. The device was subsequently sent to the FSL after Revanna and fellow undertrial prisoner Pratapa Rai, who were housed in the same cell, allegedly refused to provide the password despite repeated requests.
Police said three of the 173 files were alleged obscene videos involving Revanna. The device also contained other vulgar and obscene videos, along with Kannada, Hindi and English movie clips, web-series material and other video content.
Investigators are examining the phone’s communication records. Police said video and WhatsApp calls were allegedly made from the device to several women, including some who had previously been seen with Revanna in obscene videos before his arrest. Investigators are considering issuing notices to some of the women and questioning them about the calls.
A pen drive reportedly recovered during the investigation contained more than 150 videos. Police are examining its contents along with other digital evidence.
The investigation has also indicated that Revanna allegedly used the mobile phone to remain in regular contact with people outside the prison. Police are examining claims that he spoke to family members regularly and also contacted his advocate through the device.
Investigators are probing how the mobile phone entered the high-security prison. Preliminary findings suggest that a prison warder allegedly provided the device to Revanna, while police are also examining the suspected role of a rowdy-sheeter identified as Thouseef, who allegedly supplied the phone to the warder.
Revanna, who has been convicted in a rape case, is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, son of former minister H.D. Revanna and nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
The Parappana Agrahara police are continuing to question prison staff and analyse the mobile phone, pen drive, videos and call records to determine whether prison rules or other laws were violated and whether any of the digital material is connected to the cases involving Revanna.
