Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant on Friday held bilateral meetings with judicial leaders from BRICS member states and partner countries on the opening day of the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum, with discussions covering judicial cooperation, alternative dispute resolution, commercial courts and the use of artificial intelligence in justice delivery.
The Supreme Court of India is hosting the three-day forum from September 4 to 6, bringing together Chief Justices, Presidents of Supreme Courts and senior judicial representatives from BRICS member states and partner countries.
During the bilateral discussions, Justice Surya Kant explored the possibility of signing Memoranda of Understanding on judicial cooperation, mutual recognition of judicial awards and decrees, and exchanges of legal and judicial best practices.
Mediation and arbitration figured prominently in the discussions, particularly their role in resolving business and corporate disputes and creating a more conducive environment for commercial activity between countries. The CJI also stressed the importance of efficient commercial courts in strengthening foreign investor confidence and discussed the possibility of establishing a common platform for arbitration and mediation for commercial disputes.
Justice Surya Kant underlined the judiciary’s role in promoting coordinated bilateral cooperation and strengthening relations between participating countries. Discussions also covered professional exchange programmes through institutions such as the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, as well as the possibility of organising bilateral conferences on contemporary legal issues.
The CJI emphasised that faster judicial processes could contribute to stronger people-to-people ties and greater engagement among participating judiciaries.
Among the judicial leaders who met Justice Surya Kant were Russian Supreme Court Chief Justice Igor Krasnov, China’s Chief Justice and President of the Supreme People’s Court Zhang Jun, Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court Chief Justice Boulos Gahmy Iskander Boulos, Indonesia’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Prof Dr Sunarto, and Iran’s Chief Justice Ayatollah Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i.
He also met UAE Federal Supreme Court President Mohammed Hamad Al Badi Al Dhaheri, Belarus Supreme Court Chairman Andrei Shved, Kazakhstan Supreme Court Chairman Aslambek Mergaliyev, South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal President Mahube Betty Molemela, and Uzbekistan Supreme Court Deputy Chairperson Malikakhon Kalandarova.
The Supreme Court said the meetings enabled direct interaction and exchange of views on matters of mutual judicial interest and would strengthen engagement among participating judiciaries.
Judicial leaders from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the UAE, along with partner countries Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan, are participating in the forum.
The three-day event will facilitate discussions on justice delivery, international dispute resolution, technology and sustainable development. On the second day, heads of delegations from BRICS member states and partner countries will address the forum and share their perspectives on issues of common interest to judicial institutions.
