Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has said dharma should not be equated with religion or worship, describing it instead as a universal principle that sustains existence and balances the needs of individuals, society and the environment.
Addressing the Universal Oneness Celebration at Madison Square Garden in New York, Bhagwat said the concept of dharma extended beyond religious identity and rituals.
“Dharma is not religion. It is not a worship. It is beyond all this,” he said, explaining it as the principle through which the universe is sustained and human beings navigate the dualities of life.
Bhagwat said dharma did not require individual progress to come at the expense of society, or societal development to suppress individuals. Instead, he said, individuals, society and the environment must progress together.
He extended the principle of balance to human development, saying the body, mind and intellect should also advance together.

Describing dharma as a principle that unites and sustains different aspects of existence, Bhagwat said its foundation was the recognition of the oneness of existence.
“Our destiny is to give that to world and the solid foundation on which this Dharma is perceived is the oneness, unity of existence,” he said.
Bhagwat urged people to recognise this underlying principle within themselves as well as others and work for the welfare of humanity and the wider world.
He said human life had a purpose beyond material existence, including self-realisation and service to others.
“Human life is not purposeless. It is not meaningless. It is not a simple coincidence,” Bhagwat said, adding that the message should be demonstrated through conduct rather than merely preached.
He said India’s role was to demonstrate this balanced approach through practice and example.
Concluding his remarks, Bhagwat said diversity was a natural feature of existence while unity represented its deeper truth, and urged people to shape their lives accordingly.
The RSS was founded in Nagpur in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Bhagwat became its sixth Sarsanghchalak in 2009 after holding several senior positions in the organisation.
