Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings to people in India and around the world on the occasions of Onam and Eid Milad-un-Nabi, wishing for happiness, togetherness, prosperity and kindness.
Taking to X, Modi said Onam was a vibrant festival celebrated with enthusiasm across the world and expressed hope that it would strengthen the spirit of happiness, togetherness and prosperity.
“Wishing everyone a beautiful Onam. This is a vibrant festival celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the world. May this festival further empower the spirit of happiness, togetherness, and prosperity,” the Prime Minister said.
He also greeted people on Eid Milad-un-Nabi, saying, “Eid Mubarak! Greetings on Milad-un-Nabi. I hope this occasion furthers togetherness and joy all around us. May the spirit of kindness and giving back to society always guide us.”
Onam, Kerala’s major harvest festival, is celebrated over 10 days during the Malayalam month of Chingam. Thiruvonam, the most significant day of the celebrations, falls on August 26 this year.
The festival is traditionally associated with the annual return of King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered in popular tradition as a period of peace, prosperity and abundance. According to Hindu mythology, Mahabali was granted a boon by Lord Vishnu in the Vamana avatar to return to his people once a year.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi, also known as Mawlid or Eid-e-Milad, commemorates the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. It is observed on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and is marked by prayers, religious gatherings and acts of charity in many communities.
The Prime Minister has previously emphasised themes of harmony, brotherhood and kindness in his Milad-un-Nabi greetings.
