Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman is leading the search for Tamil Nadu’s next singing sensation with “Tamil Idol”, a statewide talent hunt that will open auditions for aspiring singers from across the state.
Sony Vizha has unveiled Tamil Idol as the first Tamil edition of one of the world’s iconic singing competition formats. Rahman announced that auditions will begin on August 18, inviting singers across Tamil Nadu to register through the Sony LIV app.
The initiative aims to identify emerging vocal talent from different parts of the state and provide contestants an opportunity to showcase their abilities under the guidance of one of India’s most celebrated composers.
Speaking about the talent hunt, Rahman said, “The search for new voices is at the heart of music, voices that go on to reach millions. Through this journey, we uncover new talent, fresh perspectives, and the untold stories of generations. With Tamil Idol, for the very first time, we bring together the extraordinary voices of Tamil Nadu and give them a platform to be celebrated.”
Singers who are unable to attend auditions in person can also participate remotely through the Sony LIV app. Applicants have to select the Tamil Idol Audition section on the platform and complete the registration process by submitting their personal details.
The launch of Tamil Idol comes as Rahman continues to expand his work across Indian and international cinema.
Recently, the composer unveiled the soundtrack for Baab, a psychological fantasy-thriller in Arabic directed by Nayla Al Khaja. The project marked Rahman’s first collaboration on an Arabic-language film.
The original soundtrack, released through Rahman’s music label KM Musiq and distributed worldwide by Divo, features 10 compositions.
Rahman said he was drawn to Baab because of its emotional complexity and the distinctive world created by director Nayla Al Khaja.
