President Droupadi Murmu on Friday described Operation Sindoor and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as decisive measures taken in the national interest, saying the military operation sent an unequivocal message to terrorists and those who support them.
In her address to the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, the President recalled the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, and paid tribute to the valour of the armed forces.
She said the operation demonstrated the capability of India’s armed forces to carry out precise action against terrorism and warned that terrorists and their supporters would face consequences irrespective of where they sought refuge.
Referring to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, Murmu said the decision was a decisive step in the country’s interest, particularly that of farmers, in view of Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism.
The President also highlighted what she termed a major achievement in the fight against Maoism, pointing to the expansion of development initiatives in areas that were earlier affected by Left-Wing Extremism.
She cited the Bastar Olympics as an example of this transformation, noting that the event witnessed participation by a large number of sportspersons while several artists also showcased their talent.
Murmu further credited the Khelo India initiative and increased government investment in the sports ecosystem with India’s improved performance in international sporting events.
Emphasising the importance of public participation, the President said Jan Bhagidari remained an established tradition in India’s democratic system and that citizens were contributing to national welfare initiatives.
She also underlined the growing sense of cultural pride among Indians, saying that a strong connection with heritage could strengthen the nation’s inner confidence.
According to the President, India is moving forward by harmonising its cultural heritage with development.
