Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened in and around Delhi’s Red Fort ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, with extensive traffic restrictions, heavy-vehicle curbs, large-scale verification drives and upgraded anti-drone measures put in place for the national event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the Red Fort, with a large number of VIP guests expected to attend the ceremony.
DCP Traffic, Central Range, Nishant Gupta said roads surrounding the Red Fort will remain restricted for general traffic from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. on August 15. The affected roads include Netaji Subhash Marg, Lothian Road, Nishadraj Marg, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, Esplanade Road, Qila Ghat Road and Ring Road/Moat Road.
Heavy vehicles will be barred from Delhi roads from 10 p.m. on August 14 until 11 a.m. on August 15. DTC and other buses will also not operate on the affected routes during the restricted period, with diversions and revised termination points at Ramlila Maidan and Tees Hazari Court.
Gupta said designated parking locations for invited guests have been integrated with Google Maps. Traffic updates and parking-related information will also be available through the Delhi Traffic Police’s official X account.
While traffic restrictions will remain in force around the Red Fort until 11 a.m., Gupta clarified that there will be no restrictions on shops, markets or shopping malls. Roads in the Chandni Chowk area, however, will remain closed during the restricted hours.
DCP Central Rohit Rajbir Singh said thousands of personnel from Delhi Police and other security agencies have been deployed in and around the Red Fort, regarded as one of the most sensitive locations during the Independence Day celebrations.
He said the police have also introduced technological upgrades this year, including new features in the anti-drone system.
As part of the security exercise, more than 20,000 people living or working in and around the sensitive zone have been screened and verified. Police have also taken precautionary measures against individuals suspected of involvement in criminal activities.
Security measures have also been stepped up elsewhere. In Assam’s Dibrugarh, police and CRPF personnel organised a motorcycle rally ahead of the 80th Independence Day to strengthen public awareness and preparedness.
In Jammu and Kashmir, security has been intensified along the Narbal-Gulmarg Highway, where vehicles and passengers are being subjected to strict checks at multiple checkpoints.
