Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the Haryana Police’s use of lathicharge and tear gas against Sikh protesters during a demonstration in Ambala.
Dhami said the use of force against members of the Sikh community who were raising their demands through democratic means was unfortunate and condemnable. He said the authorities should respect people’s democratic rights and religious sentiments while maintaining law and order.
According to Dhami, the protest in Ambala was linked to the arrest of some Sikh youths. He said the government and police were responsible for maintaining law and order, but disputes should be resolved through dialogue and lawful action rather than through the use of force.
He also demanded the arrest of those accused of driving a vehicle into devotees at Gurdwara Sri Panjokhra Sahib in an earlier incident and called for the immediate release of the Sikh youths who have been arrested.
Dhami said the Sikh community had consistently raised its voice for justice, human rights and truth, and stressed that such matters should be resolved peacefully and through constitutional means.
He urged the Haryana government to engage with representatives of the Sikh community at the earliest to prevent further escalation and ensure justice for the arrested youths and their families.
The SGPC chief said coercive action against members of the sangat could not provide a solution to the issue. He called upon the government to uphold public confidence through impartiality, transparency and dialogue.
