Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit president Giani Harpreet Singh has condemned the alleged lathi-charge on Sikh protesters in Haryana, saying that the administration should have addressed their demands through due legal process instead of using force.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, Singh said the protest was organised a day earlier by members of the Sikh community seeking registration of a police case against Ludhiana-based Gursimran Mand, whom they alleged was involved in an incident in which a vehicle was driven into people.
The protesters were also demanding the arrest of the father and son allegedly involved in the matter and the release of Sikhs whom they claimed had been unlawfully detained.
Singh said the administration’s alleged failure to act on these demands compelled the community to stage a protest and block the road. He maintained that peaceful protest was a legitimate democratic means of raising grievances and seeking justice.
According to Singh, instead of addressing the protesters’ concerns, the Haryana Police resorted to a lathi-charge. He alleged that the action injured several members of the Sikh community, including Jathedar Jagdish Singh Jhinda, president of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.
Condemning what he described as the “repressive use of force”, Singh demanded that the protesters’ demands be accepted immediately and that action be taken against police personnel allegedly responsible for the injuries.
He also prayed for the speedy recovery and well-being of Jathedar Jhinda and the other injured protesters.
