Punjab Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday condemned the Haryana Police action against Sikh protesters in Ambala, demanding the immediate release of two Sikh youths and an FIR against the person accused of allegedly ramming his car into people.
In a statement, Warring said the protesters had gathered peacefully in Ambala and were seeking the release of the two Sikh youths whom he alleged had been “arbitrarily” arrested by the Haryana Police.
The Punjab Congress chief also questioned Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s silence over the incident and said the Chief Minister owed an explanation to Sikhs and Punjabis.
Warring referred to Saini’s frequent visits to Punjab, where he said the Haryana Chief Minister was welcomed in accordance with Sikh traditions and Punjabi hospitality.
“Beware of the same people protesting against you for these incidents, who otherwise have been according warm welcome to you in Punjab,” Warring cautioned Saini.
He also alleged that the person at the centre of the controversy, whom he described as the “main agent provocateur”, belonged to Ludhiana. Warring claimed that the individual was known for making controversial and provocative statements allegedly to obtain official security cover.
The PCC president warned that encouraging such individuals could pose a threat to peace and communal harmony in the state.
Warring appealed to the Haryana government to exercise restraint and avoid using force against peaceful protesters. He also reiterated his demand for the immediate release of the two Sikh youths, whom he said had been falsely implicated.
He further demanded registration of an FIR against the accused person involved in the alleged car-ramming incident.
