The Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit has rejected the resignations submitted by some of its senior leaders following what the party described as misunderstandings, Secretary General Gurpartap Singh Wadala said on Thursday.
In a written statement, Wadala said Senior Vice President Santa Singh Umaidpuri, General Secretary Jasbir Singh Ghuman and some of their associates had tendered their resignations a few days ago.
He said the resignations were rejected following directions from party president Giani Harpreet Singh and consultations with the senior leadership. The leaders will continue to hold their respective positions in the party, he added.
Wadala described Umaidpuri as a veteran Taksali Akali who had contributed to the membership drive of the revived Akali Dal in accordance with the directions of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
He also highlighted Ghuman’s traditional Akali background, saying he belonged to an Akali family and had himself spent his youth in Jodhpur Jail.
According to Wadala, their associates Harinderpal Singh Tohra, Gurwinder Singh Gogi, Harbhajan Singh Patran and Amarjit Singh Sanaur have also decided to remain with the Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit.
“We wholeheartedly welcome their decision to remain with the party and reject all the resignations. This will further strengthen the party,” Wadala said.
The party said the decision followed consultations aimed at resolving the differences and retaining the senior leaders within its organisational structure.
