Partition would not have happened if Modi were PM in 1947, says Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said India would not have been partitioned in 1947 had Narendra Modi been the country’s Prime Minister at the time.

Addressing an event in Lucknow organised to commemorate the horrors of the 1947 Partition, Adityanath also invoked former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel while criticising the Congress over the division of the country.

“Had a person like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel been the Prime Minister in 1947, no one would have fragmented India’s unity,” he said, adding later that the Partition could have been avoided had someone like Narendra Modi been Prime Minister.

Adityanath described Partition as “one of the darkest chapters” in the history of humanity and alleged that the Congress’s “hunger for power” contributed to the division and the violence that followed.

“Punjab and Bengal were forcefully disintegrated,” he said, alleging that the Congress betrayed the trust placed in it by the people.

The Chief Minister also accused the Congress of remaining silent over alleged atrocities against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh because of concerns about its vote bank in India. He alleged that political interests had repeatedly taken precedence over national concerns.

Questioning whether those responsible for Partition had ever been punished, Adityanath alleged that political divisions between regions and communities, including Hindus and Sikhs, had weakened the country and contributed to the circumstances that led to Partition.

He said India continued to face the consequences of the division through challenges such as terrorism and Naxalism.

Adityanath also criticised opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), saying there was no provision in the law to take away the land of Muslims, the Congress or the Samajwadi Party. He alleged that the Congress and the Samajwadi Party had strengthened protests against the legislation.

Referring to the communal riots that followed the CAA protests, he questioned whether Uttar Pradesh could have recovered had the Samajwadi Party been in power at the time.

The Chief Minister linked his criticism of the two opposition parties to the events surrounding Partition, alleging that their politics had contributed to divisions that ultimately weakened the country.
