The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Friday launched a sharp attack on Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his recent remarks mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic engagements, accusing him of undermining the dignity of a constitutional office.
The controversy stems from Gandhi’s remarks at the ‘Rachnatmak Congress’ National Convention in Delhi on Thursday, where he took a dig at the Prime Minister’s foreign policy and his public gestures of embracing foreign leaders.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh said Gandhi’s conduct was unbecoming of the office of the Leader of Opposition, pointing out that the position had previously been held by leaders such as Ram Manohar Lohia, Acharya Kripalani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Chandrashekhar and L.K. Advani.
“The post of the Leader of the Opposition has been held by distinguished leaders such as Ram Manohar Lohia, Acharya Kripalani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Chandrashekhar, and L.K. Advani. Yet Rahul Gandhi used language that was unbecoming of the office. His conduct appeared more like theatrics than serious politics,” Singh told IANS.
Singh also referred to Gandhi’s family background, noting that his great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, grandmother Indira Gandhi and father Rajiv Gandhi had served as Prime Ministers. He alleged that Gandhi lacked an understanding of foreign policy and accused him of pursuing what he described as an agenda associated with George Soros.
The minister further claimed that the Indian diaspora respected Prime Minister Modi because of his foreign policy.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi also criticised Gandhi, alleging that his conduct reflected frustration after what he described as disruptions in Parliament.
“After having completely disrupted the Parliament session through their unruly behaviour; the uncivilised, unbecoming, and reprehensible language that Rahul Gandhi used from the official platform of the Congress party indicates that perhaps out of deep frustration, he is crossing all limits and boundaries,” Trivedi said.
VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said Gandhi’s remarks had lowered the standard of political discourse and questioned how a party that had governed India for decades could engage in such rhetoric.
“Making such nonsensical remarks about the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), and continuously shredding the dignity of words and speech, is utterly shameful and reflects the lowest level of this country’s politics,” Bansal told IANS.
BJP leader Rohan Gupta said personal and derogatory remarks had no place in political discourse, particularly from someone holding the constitutional position of Leader of the Opposition.
“The Leader of the Opposition is a Constitutional post, and I do not think such comments are befitting of a person holding this position. The kind of personal remarks and derogatory language being used today have no place in politics. There should be no such level of discourse in political life,” Gupta said.
