Canada all-rounder Harsh Thaker has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee and handed two demerit points for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during his side’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match against Scotland here on Friday.
Thaker was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.
The incident occurred at the end of the 26th over when Thaker reacted angrily after his leg-before-wicket appeal was turned down by the on-field umpire. He flailed his arms and shook his head before gesturing towards the Canadian coaching staff after receiving his cap back from the umpire, indicating that he believed the batter was out.
The offence was charged by on-field umpires Gazi Sohel and Iain McDonald, along with reserve umpire David McLean.
Thaker admitted the breach and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Graham McCrea of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees, meaning no formal hearing was required.
The two demerit points mark Thaker’s first disciplinary offence under the ICC Code in a 24-month period.
Level 1 breaches carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
A player who accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months has those points converted into suspension points. Two suspension points result in a ban from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first for the player.
