The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun gathering information on Pakistani national Wahab Alam, who was arrested by the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) from Habra in North 24 Parganas district earlier this week over alleged links with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
The move follows the state STF’s preliminary investigation, which reportedly pointed to Alam’s alleged association with the Pakistani intelligence agency. The NIA has approached the Bengal STF for details of the investigation and information collected so far.
According to sources aware of the development, the central agency is seeking details of Alam’s contacts and movements in West Bengal after he allegedly entered India illegally in 2012 using forged Indian identity documents.
The NIA has also sought information about Mohammad Izaz, an alleged co-accused who reportedly helped arrange Alam’s settlement in India. Izaz is currently in STF custody.
The agency is examining the material collected by the state police to determine the next course of its investigation. Investigators are also looking into communication networks allegedly linked to Alam and Izaz and whether their contacts extend to other individuals.
NIA officials may question both accused persons in the coming days. Sources said they could also be questioned together, if required, to compare their statements and establish possible links between information gathered during the probe.
Meanwhile, the Bengal STF is examining communications from Alam’s mobile phone and other digital devices seized during his arrest, including his netbook.
A police source said Alam allegedly entered West Bengal through Nepal. Investigators have also learnt that he had married a local woman, identified as Shilu, while he was in Nepal.
The Bengal Police is approaching the Ministry of External Affairs through diplomatic channels to obtain detailed information about Alam’s wife from the Nepalese authorities.
The STF’s preliminary investigation has further indicated that Alam was allegedly sent to West Bengal by the ISI to gather information about the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Railways in the eastern part of the country.
The NIA is assessing the information received from the state police as it considers the next steps in the investigation.
