Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha marked 30 years of marriage to filmmaker and writer Paul Mayeda Berges by sharing an unseen glimpse from their wedding day and recalling a memorable exchange with her wedding videographer.
Taking to Instagram, the Kenyan-British director posted a throwback photograph in which she is dressed as an Indian bride in a traditional pink outfit and is seen smiling while sitting beside Paul inside a car.
Alongside the photograph, Gurinder recalled the videographer’s unusual instruction during the wedding ceremony: “Look down an Indian bride never smiles – you’ll ruin the bloody video!”
Sharing the memory while wishing her husband on their anniversary, she wrote, “30 years ago today! ‘Look down an indian bride never smiles – you’ll ruin the bloody video!’ Dialogue from my actual wedding videographer to #benditlikebeckham Happy Anniversary to my dearest hubby Babaji Bless.”
Gurinder and Paul have been married for three decades and have also shared a professional partnership, collaborating on several film projects, including Bend It Like Beckham.
The couple are parents to twins, son Ronak and daughter Kumiko, who were born on June 7, 2007.
Gurinder is best known for Bend It Like Beckham, a film that explored cultural identity, family and the experiences of Indians living in England. Her other notable projects include Bhaji on the Beach, Bride and Prejudice, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, It’s a Wonderful Afterlife, Viceroy’s House, Blinded by the Light, Beecham House and Christmas Karma.
Her work has frequently focused on themes of culture, identity and family, while her creative collaboration with Paul has extended across several of her projects.
