Union Home Minister Amit Shah has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to consult Opposition leaders and facilitate a discussion in the House on the NEET students’ protest, asserting that democratic solutions can emerge only through dialogue.
In his letter, Shah said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had already agreed at the Business Advisory Committee meeting to a discussion on the student protests related to the NEET examination.
Shah noted that the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, had been discussed in Parliament earlier, but no Opposition member had raised the NEET examination issue during that debate. Despite this, he said, the government was prepared to discuss the matter again.
The Home Minister asked Birla to consult Opposition parties and, on the basis of mutual agreement, allot as much time as considered appropriate for the discussion, beginning Wednesday.
Shah also said he would remain present in the Lok Sabha during the debate and answer questions raised by Opposition members.
“In a democracy, solutions emerge only through discussion and dialogue,” Shah said, reiterating his faith in democratic institutions and the role of Parliament as a forum for debate.
He urged the Speaker to facilitate the discussion in a constructive atmosphere, allowing members from both the Treasury and Opposition benches to present their views.
The development comes amid Opposition criticism over Shah’s alleged absence from the House and demands for a statement on police action against students who participated in a protest march. The issue has contributed to repeated disruptions in Parliament.
Earlier on Wednesday, speaking to reporters on the Parliament premises, Shah rejected the allegation that he was avoiding the House and said he had been regularly attending the ongoing Monsoon Session.
He also pointed out that Rijiju had already conveyed the government’s willingness to hold a detailed discussion on the students’ protests. Shah said the government had accepted the Opposition’s demand for a debate and that he had personally expressed his readiness to respond to questions in Parliament.
