Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a case registered on the complaint of a medical student, who has alleged sexual assault, criminal intimidation and other offences, police said.
Porel was arrested by Hooghly district police from Emami City under Dum Dum police station, according to Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh.
The case was registered at Mogra Police Station after the woman, a medical student from Karnataka, filed a complaint on June 23. She alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that he had engaged in sexual relations with her on a promise of marriage. She also alleged assault and criminal intimidation.
Police have registered the case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to sexual intercourse through a false promise of marriage, along with Sections 66E and 72 of the Information Technology Act.
A senior police officer said Porel was arrested in connection with Mogra Police Station Case No. 346/26 following allegations that he cohabited with the complainant on the promise of marriage.
The complainant had earlier approached the Calcutta High Court after alleging that police had not acted on her complaint. Porel had denied the allegations.
In an order dated July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed police to continue efforts to apprehend Porel and another accused. The court also directed the seizure of electronic devices to prevent the alleged dissemination of private material connected with the complainant.
Following his arrest on Tuesday, Porel was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court at Chinsurah in Hooghly. His lawyers sought bail, but the court rejected the application and remanded him to police custody for three days.
Porel is a prominent Bengal cricketer who represents Delhi Capitals in the IPL. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and subsequently received India A call-ups. He joined Delhi Capitals in 2023 and has remained associated with the franchise.
