At least four people were killed after a helicopter crashed in a forested area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, firefighters said.
The accident occurred around 11:11 a.m. local time on Saturday in the Vista Chinesa area of Alto da Boa Vista. Emergency services were alerted and later located the wreckage in dense vegetation.
Specialised rescue teams reached the crash site by land, while firefighting units were deployed to control a blaze that broke out after the helicopter crashed, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The helicopter was carrying the pilot and three Colombian women belonging to the same family. Authorities confirmed four deaths but had not immediately released the identities of the victims.
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said he had been in contact with Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
Cavaliere said the city administration had asked ANAC to strengthen oversight of helicopter operations in Rio de Janeiro, citing the increasing frequency of such flights in the city. He also offered municipal resources to support any measures or investigations required by the aviation authorities.
The latest accident comes amid other recent aviation incidents in Brazil.
In June, two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro, killing six people, including American singer Oliver Tree and Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim.
Last year, a small aircraft crashed and exploded near a beach in Ubatuba, in southeastern São Paulo state, killing the pilot and injuring seven others. According to the local fire department, the pilot was attempting to land at Ubatuba regional airport but was unable to stop the aircraft before it crossed the airport’s security fence.
