A 20-year-old college student has been arrested in Indore for allegedly killing her 75-year-old grandfather with a cricket bat, with police saying she has claimed that the elderly man had subjected her to prolonged sexual abuse and harassment.
The incident occurred late Saturday night under the Aerodrome police station limits. According to police, the woman, who lives with her parents in Mahalaxmi Nagar, went to her grandparents’ residence on a motorcycle and stayed there.
An argument reportedly broke out between the woman and her grandfather, following which she allegedly picked up a cricket bat and struck him repeatedly on the head.
The man’s wife reportedly saw him bleeding and raised an alarm. Family members rushed him to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police subsequently took custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
The deceased was a retired Special Armed Forces (SAF) personnel and lived separately with his wife.
During questioning, the woman allegedly told police that her grandfather had repeatedly behaved indecently towards her and sexually abused her over a prolonged period. She claimed that the alleged abuse had caused her severe mental distress and that the harassment had continued on a daily basis.
Police said the woman had not previously disclosed the alleged abuse, citing concerns over social stigma and family reputation. Investigators are now examining the allegations as well as the circumstances that preceded the killing.
Police said the woman’s role came under suspicion during the investigation, following which she was arrested.
Senior police officials said the allegations made by the woman are being examined and investigators are looking into whether any previous complaint had been made to family members or authorities. Other relatives are also being questioned, while evidence is being collected from the crime scene.
The student is also being subjected to psychological questioning, police said. Further action will depend on the post-mortem findings and the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Police stressed that the complete circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations of sexual abuse will become clear only after the investigation is completed.
