A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted with the Government Railway Police (GRP) was shot at by three unidentified motorcycle-borne men while he was returning home from duty in Amritsar, prompting BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu to question the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government over the state’s law and order situation.
The injured policeman, identified as Sukhchain Singh, was travelling towards his home in Jagdev Khurd village under the jurisdiction of Ajnala police station when the attack took place near a canal bridge close to the village.
According to police, Singh was riding his motorcycle when three unidentified men on another motorcycle approached him and opened fire from close range. A bullet struck his left shoulder and passed through.
DSP Dharmendra Kalyan said Singh was returning home after duty when the assailants targeted him. He said the injured ASI was admitted to hospital and an FIR had been registered.
Police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest the attackers. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been established.
