Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has recalled the philosophy that shaped the Indian team during Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, saying the focus was on playing more matches overseas and winning on international soil.
Speaking to IANS during promotions for the streaming reality show Rise & Fall, Sehwag said he could only speak from his experience of playing under Ganguly and did not want to comment on the current Indian team, of which he is no longer a part.
“See, I was part of the team under Dada’s leadership. So, I can speak about the philosophy of that team. I am not a part of the current Indian line-up so, I won’t be able to talk about it, as I don’t know about them, and their playing style,” he said.
Sehwag explained that the team’s objective during Ganguly’s tenure was to play as many international matches as possible and establish a stronger winning record away from home.
“Our philosophy was to play as many games as possible, and win the matches on the international soil. We worked on that and under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, we did it, and delivered the same,” he told IANS.
Sehwag also recalled that his own batting approach was not always aggressive, saying he adapted his style according to the demands of a particular situation.
“It’s not that I always played aggressively in sports, I also played defensively there. I have also played with negative surroundings,” he said.
Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar formed one of India’s most prolific opening combinations during their era, making significant contributions with the bat in several victories.
Meanwhile, Sehwag has taken over as host of the second season of Rise & Fall, replacing Ashneer Grover. The reality show features 15 contestants competing over 42 days in a format built around power, strategy, alliances and changing fortunes.
The contestants are divided into Rulers, who control the game from the Tower, and Workers, who live in the Basement and compete for opportunities to move up. The second season also introduces greater audience participation, allowing viewers to influence who becomes a Ruler or Worker.
Produced by Banijay Asia, Rise & Fall is streaming on Amazon MX Player.
