Two people were killed and around 20 others injured after a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus lost control and overturned on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district on Saturday.
The accident occurred near Avaragere Gate in Ramanagara taluk, within the limits of Bidadi police station. The bus was travelling from Kozhikode in Kerala to Bengaluru when it reportedly lost control in rainy conditions and crashed into a large roadside directional signboard before overturning.
Police said the bus struck the signboard with considerable force, causing the structure to collapse as the vehicle overturned on the expressway.
The deceased have been identified as the bus driver, Mithilesh, and conductor, Arun, according to preliminary information. They died at the spot.
Around 20 passengers sustained injuries, with four reported to be in critical condition. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The police said several others suffered minor injuries.
Personnel from the Bidadi police station and the Fire and Emergency Services Department reached the site soon after receiving information and began rescue and clearance operations.
The accident severely disrupted traffic on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, with vehicles backing up along the affected stretch. Emergency teams worked to remove the overturned bus and restore traffic movement.
Police said no other vehicle was close to the bus when the accident occurred, potentially preventing a larger collision.
The exact cause of the accident is yet to be established. Bidadi police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash.
The incident comes months after another fatal accident on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway in Ramanagara district. On March 23, four passengers were killed and several others injured after a bus crashed into a roadside fence.
