Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is currently “very difficult”, while describing his leadership as a major source of strength for the country amid mounting challenges.
In an interview published on the official website of the Iranian President’s office, Pezeshkian said the presence of the new Supreme Leader would help Iran continue its path despite difficult circumstances.
“The country continued, and our new beloved leader was selected. Our new dear leader’s presence is a very great strength for us to be able to continue this path, although communication with him is very difficult at the moment,” he said.
Pezeshkian claimed that the United States and Israel had killed Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28 out of “desperation”, expecting the country to collapse after what he described as a “brutal” action.
He said Iran was currently facing its “most difficult” situation, citing intensified banking sanctions, restrictions on foreign financial transactions, a naval blockade and an ongoing conflict.
Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, was selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader by the country’s Assembly of Experts in early March.
The remarks come amid developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran and Oman are reportedly close to finalising an arrangement for commercial shipping. Under the proposed framework, temporary northern and southern routes would be replaced by a single route passing through Iranian territorial waters for a period of two to four months.
A source close to Iran’s negotiating team told semi-official Fars news agency that reopening the strait depends on concrete implementation of commitments by the United States. The source also said a US Treasury Department decision to remove sanctions on an Iraqi airline was unrelated to the Iran-US memorandum of understanding.
Iran tightened controls over the Strait of Hormuz on February 28, restricting safe passage for vessels linked to Israel and the United States following joint strikes on Iranian territory.
The US military later carried out multiple strikes on Iranian targets, stating that the action was aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the region. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US military bases and facilities.
