PM Modi Hails UNESCO World Heritage Status for Sarnath, Calls It a Proud Moment for India

New Delhi, July 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed the inscription of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh on the UNESCO World Heritage List, describing it as a proud moment for every Indian and a recognition of the country’s rich civilisational and spiritual legacy.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Sarnath, closely associated with Lord Buddha, continues to inspire the world through his timeless message of wisdom, compassion and harmony.

“This recognition celebrates India’s profound civilisational and spiritual heritage. It will also inspire more people across the world to come to Sarnath and connect with the ideals of Lord Buddha,” PM Modi said.

Earlier in the day, UNESCO announced the inclusion of the ancient Buddhist site on its World Heritage List during the ongoing 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

The Ministry of External Affairs also welcomed the decision, saying the inscription highlights India’s rich cultural heritage and the universal relevance of Lord Buddha’s teachings.

Sarnath holds immense historical and religious significance as the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, marking the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion.

The site is also home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, which was later adopted as the National Emblem of India.

India’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Vishal V. Sharma, said the recognition honours India’s enduring civilisational heritage and reinforces the universal values of peace, compassion and harmony associated with Buddha’s teachings. He added that Sarnath continues to serve as a place of reflection for millions of Buddhists around the world.
