The Centre has terminated the services of 47 officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA) as part of a major overhaul of the country’s examination system amid the ongoing controversy over the alleged NEET paper leak.
Sources in the Union Education Ministry said on Friday that legal and criminal proceedings could also be initiated against some of the dismissed officials as investigations into examination irregularities continue.
The action comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans for tougher measures to curb paper leaks, including fast-track courts, and follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of a proposed Bill prescribing stricter punishment for examination malpractices.
According to official sources, the restructuring of the NTA is aimed at strengthening the integrity of national-level examinations and preventing future paper leaks.
The overhaul is expected to include changes in the agency’s outsourcing processes to make the examination system more secure and leak-proof. A committee of experts has been tasked with recommending reforms to improve the functioning of the NTA.
The restructuring exercise is expected to be completed within the next month.
The NTA conducts more than 20 national-level entrance examinations, including NEET, JEE and CUET, and has come under intense scrutiny following allegations of paper leaks and demands for greater transparency in the examination process.
Earlier on Friday, the Union Cabinet approved a draft Bill proposing fast-track courts and enhanced penalties for those involved in paper leaks and examination fraud. The legislation is expected to be introduced in Parliament next week.
According to sources, the proposed fast-track courts will be required to complete trials and deliver judgments within three months.
