Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee will travel to New Delhi on July 27 to join the protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against alleged NEET examination paper leaks, according to party sources.
The announcement comes after Banerjee expressed support for the movement during the Trinamool Congress’ Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata on July 21, saying she would participate in the protest in the national capital.
It is not yet clear whether Banerjee will only make a brief appearance at the Jantar Mantar demonstration or take part in the protest programme in detail. Her other engagements in Delhi, including possible meetings with opposition leaders, have also not been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Banerjee appointed senior Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy as the party’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha.
Roy, a four-time MP from Dum Dum constituency in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, replaces Satabdi Roy, a four-time MP from Birbhum who has reportedly moved to the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) along with several other former Trinamool lawmakers.
Following the reported shift of 20 Lok Sabha members, Trinamool Congress’ strength in the House has been reduced, with party leader Abhishek Banerjee continuing as the Lok Sabha leader of the party.
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had urged opposition parties to unite under the INDIA bloc and organise joint movements against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government.
