Tripura DGP forms three-member team to probe death of former police chief Anurag

Agartala, July 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) has constituted a three-member team to investigate the death of former state police chief Anurag, whose body was found at the Tripura Police Headquarters in Agartala on July 20.

According to an order issued by the DGP’s office, Superintendent of Police (West Tripura) Namit Pathak will head the probe team. Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban), West Tripura, Dhruba Nath, and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb, who is already investigating the unnatural death case, are the other members.

The order stated that the team may include additional officers from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or other units if required. Technical assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit may also be sought during the investigation.

The probe team has been directed to submit weekly progress reports to the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) for review by the DGP.

Anurag’s body was found under mysterious circumstances in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala. The 1994-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Tripura cadre was later cremated with full state honours at his ancestral town of Baraut in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on July 22.

The death has triggered demands from opposition parties, including the CPI(M), CPI and Congress, for a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court. The parties have organised protests seeking an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Anurag had taken charge as Tripura DGP on May 17, 2025, after serving as Director General of Police (Intelligence) in the state.
