The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Divisional Materials Manager (Sr DMM) of the North Eastern Railway in Varanasi for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.70 lakh, officials said on Friday.
The agency registered a case on July 23 following a complaint by the proprietor of a private firm registered on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform.
According to the complaint, the firm had supplied furniture worth Rs 9.47 lakh to the office of the Sr DMM, North Eastern Railway, Varanasi, between February and June 2026. The complainant alleged that only part of the payment had been released and the railway officer demanded Rs 1.70 lakh as illegal gratification for clearing pending dues and facilitating future payments.
The officer was also accused of allegedly threatening to deny future contracts if the bribe demand was not fulfilled.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on July 23 and allegedly caught the officer while accepting the bribe amount. He was subsequently arrested and produced before a court in Lucknow, which sent him to judicial custody till August 7.
The CBI said further investigation in the case is underway.
In a separate case, a special CBI court in Ghaziabad convicted and sentenced a former branch manager of Sarva UP Gramin Bank to four years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000 in a decade-old bribery case.
Umesh Kumar Singhal, who was posted as Branch Manager at the Machhra branch in Meerut, was found guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a loan applicant.
