Content creator Apoorva Makhija has opened up about the emotional impact of the controversy surrounding the YouTube comedy show India’s Got Latent, revealing that she experienced suicidal thoughts during the difficult period and crediting fellow creator Sufi Motiwala for helping her cope.
Speaking during an emotional conversation with Sufi Motiwala on Lock Upp Season 2, Apoorva said his support was crucial at a time when she felt isolated.
“I would’ve killed myself if, at the time of the Latent fiasco, I didn’t have Sufi,” she said, adding that he was the only friend who stood by her during the crisis.
Responding to her remarks, Sufi urged her not to speak that way, while Apoorva reiterated that she would not have been able to get through the ordeal without his support.
Sufi also reflected on their friendship, describing the period they spent together as one of the happiest phases of his life. He said their bond gave him a sense of belonging and someone he could rely on in Mumbai.
The conversation concluded with both apologising to each other. Apoorva expressed regret for not always providing a safe space for Sufi when he needed it.
Apoorva Makhija came under intense public scrutiny last year following the controversy over India’s Got Latent, hosted by influencer Samay Raina. The show attracted widespread criticism over allegedly offensive remarks made during an episode, leading to multiple police complaints and legal scrutiny involving Apoorva and other members associated with the programme.
The controversy also triggered extensive trolling against Apoorva across social media platforms.
