Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike Successful, Says Wife; Hopes Movement Spurs Education Reforms

Gurugram, July 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A day after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike, his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, described the agitation as a success and expressed hope that the nationwide support for the movement would serve as a wake-up call for the Central government.

Speaking to reporters, Angmo said the government had provided a written assurance that no legal action would be taken against students who participated in the July 20 Parliament march or those continuing their protest at Jantar Mantar.

She said the assurance also stated that no FIRs would be registered, no lathi charge or excessive force would be used against protesters, and that families of students who allegedly died by suicide in connection with the NEET paper leak issue would receive compensation.

According to Angmo, the government has further agreed to discuss the proposed examination and education reforms during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

She said Wangchuk had ensured the safety of the protesting students by securing these written commitments before ending his fast. The future course of the agitation, she added, would be decided by student leaders after their meeting with government representatives.

Calling the movement “very successful”, Angmo said it had received support from across the political spectrum and from people across the country. She maintained that the NEET paper leak was only a symptom of deeper systemic issues and expressed hope that the campaign would lead to meaningful reforms in the education sector.

On Wangchuk’s health, she said he was recovering and had been placed on a liquid diet, with doctors planning a gradual transition to semi-solid and solid food.
