Punjab Police on Sunday said Amritsar Rural Police had foiled a suspected terror plot targeting a police establishment with the recovery of a 690-gram Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along with an electronic detonator, battery, timer and iron box.
The recovery was made during the intervening night of August 15 and 16, when security arrangements and monitoring of government establishments had been intensified in view of Independence Day.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the explosive material was handled in accordance with established security protocols and safely defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad.
“The Amritsar Rural Police has foiled a design of anti-national elements and averted a potential threat to public safety,” the DGP said.
He added that further investigation was underway to identify and apprehend those behind the alleged plot.
Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said checking points had already been intensified and government establishments were being closely monitored as part of the security arrangements.
According to Chahal, Assistant Sub-Inspector Kulbir Singh was on night patrol when he noticed a suspicious black-coloured packet wrapped in wax lying within the jurisdiction of Police Post Gaggomahal.
Upon examination, the packet was found to contain the suspected IED, an electronic detonator, a battery, a timer and an iron box.
The Bomb Disposal Squad was immediately called to the spot and safely destroyed the explosive material there. The other recovered items were taken into police custody for investigation.
A case has been registered as FIR No. 162 dated August 16, 2026, under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act at Police Station Ramdas in Amritsar Rural.
