Elon Musk has said social media platform X will provide users with greater visibility into government requests seeking the removal or restriction of online content, as part of a broader push for transparency in content moderation and recommendation systems.
In a post on X, Musk said government-mandated censorship would now be clearly visible to users.
“Any censorship required by governments is now clearly visible,” Musk said.
Under the proposed changes, users will be able to see when government authorities seek the removal of posts or restrictions on accounts. X also plans to disclose the government agencies making such requests and, where available, the legal basis or justification cited for the action.
The move is part of Musk’s wider effort to increase transparency around how content is moderated, ranked and distributed on the platform, formerly known as Twitter.
Since acquiring the platform, Musk has repeatedly argued that users should have greater insight into the mechanisms governing content moderation and recommendation.
According to a report by Crypto Briefing, X complied with between 83 per cent and 98.8 per cent of government requests to remove content under Musk’s ownership, depending on the reporting period. The report said the compliance rate was higher than under the platform’s previous management.
X has also pursued greater openness around its recommendation technology. The platform has supported efforts to open-source parts of its recommendation systems, allowing researchers and users to examine how content-ranking mechanisms work and how posts are promoted or suppressed.
The company has sought to provide users with more information about factors affecting the visibility of posts, including whether content is being amplified, de-amplified or subjected to reach restrictions.
The latest announcement comes as X continues to face scrutiny over its handling of government requests and its approach to content moderation and distribution.
