Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu on Tuesday raised concerns over gangsterism and its implications for Punjab’s future during a session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He said the issue transcended political parties and constituencies, affecting the entire state and requiring serious discussion and concrete action.
Presenting an official document in the House, Sandhu said it was a Red Corner Notice issued against a person whom he accused of involvement in violence in Punjab, large-scale drug trafficking and the supply of illegal weapons.
Sandhu criticised the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) over its decision to give a ticket to a candidate whose family, he alleged, had links to a criminal facing a Red Corner Notice. He also questioned the appointment of the accused person’s wife as the party’s constituency in-charge in Tarn Taran, calling it a stain on Punjab’s politics and alleging that it reflected political patronage for criminal elements.
The AAP MLA urged the Speaker to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the money used during the Tarn Taran by-election. He said the probe should establish whether drug money had been used to finance election-related activities.
Sandhu also called for an impartial investigation into the murders of sarpanches and the alleged conspiracy behind them. He said families of the slain sarpanches had met him and claimed that the current constituency in-charge and her husband were in Dubai when the murders took place, alleging that the conspiracy had been hatched from abroad. He sought an SIT probe or an investigation by a special officer to establish the facts.
Expressing concern over the potential impact of gangsterism on Punjab’s administrative and political institutions, Sandhu warned that failure to curb criminal activities could allow gangsters to enter the Legislative Assembly in the future.
He questioned whether honest IPS and IAS officers would then be expected to salute people with criminal backgrounds occupying positions of power. He stressed that firm action was necessary to prevent criminal elements from gaining political influence and to safeguard Punjab’s future.
