Indian boxer Aditya clinched the men’s 55kg gold medal at the 2026 World Boxing U-19 Championships in Budva, Montenegro, leading India to a four-medal finish comprising one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Aditya, an Asian U-19 silver medallist, defeated Russia’s Islam Magomedov 4:1 in the final after recovering from a difficult opening round. The Indian boxer raised his intensity in the subsequent rounds to secure the championship title.
“I was trailing 3-2 after the first round, but I stepped it up to take the next one 4-1. That’s when the belief hit me that I could win this bout,” Aditya said after his victory.
He also thanked the coaches and teammates whose support during the training camp helped him prepare for the competition.
Aditya had booked his place in the final with a commanding 5:0 victory over Azerbaijan’s Nihat Gasimov in the men’s 55kg semifinals.
India’s hopes of securing a second gold medal ended when Megha Sheokand lost the women’s 80kg final to Russia’s Ekaterina Frolova by a 0:5 verdict. Megha had reached the final after an impressive semifinal performance against Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Chynybekova, with the referee stopping the contest in the second round following repeated counts against her opponent.
India’s two bronze medals came through Harshika in the women’s 65kg category and Prachi Tokas in the women’s 80+kg division.
Harshika narrowly missed a place in the final after losing 2:3 to the United States’ Lauryn Elmore in the semifinals. Prachi secured bronze despite a 1:4 semifinal defeat to Russia’s Samira Itonieva.
The four-medal haul gave India a gold-medal winner and three podium finishes across the women’s categories at the championships.
