Mumbai, October 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has appointed legislator Zeeshan Siddique, son of slain politician Baba Siddique, as president of its Mumbai unit as the party seeks to strengthen its organisational presence in Maharashtra’s financial capital.

NCP National President and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar handed over the formal appointment letter to Zeeshan on Tuesday.

The appointment letter stressed the need to carry forward the progressive legacy of late leader Ajit Dada Pawar, uphold the party’s tradition of public service and reinforce its grassroots commitment to citizens.

The NCP leadership expressed confidence that Zeeshan’s energy and organisational efforts would help make the Mumbai unit stronger, more effective and responsive to people’s concerns.

Zeeshan lost the 2024 Assembly election from the Bandra East constituency. His elevation comes as the party faces the challenge of expanding its support base in Mumbai, where it has traditionally struggled to match the influence of the Shiv Sena factions, the BJP and the Congress.

The NCP has historically drawn much of its organisational strength from western Maharashtra, particularly through rural networks, sugar cooperatives and local bodies. Its limited presence in Mumbai has also been shaped by past seat-sharing arrangements with the Congress, which often contested most constituencies in the city.

The party’s 2023 split into factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar further complicated its organisational position. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra.

Zeeshan now faces the task of building a stronger citywide organisation and developing an urban-focused political agenda around issues such as housing redevelopment, slum rehabilitation and public transport, while nurturing local youth leadership.

In a separate organisational decision, Sunetra Pawar appointed Umesh Patil as the party’s national chief spokesperson.
