Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit has recalled a humorous incident from the sets of her 1992 romantic drama Prem Deewane, revealing how lifelike cutouts of her character once fooled both a visiting friend and actor Aamir Khan.
Dixit shared the anecdote during a conversation on the reality game show Kon Honar Crorepati, while director Sachin Pilgaonkar explained the thought behind creating the realistic cutouts for the film.
The actress recalled that a friend who arrived late on the sets went looking for her while she was in her room. The friend initially mistook one of the cutouts for Madhuri herself and even began speaking to it before realising it was not the actress.
Pilgaonkar revealed that the cutouts were designed as an important visual element in the film’s narrative. Jackie Shroff’s character, separated from Madhuri’s character, continues to live surrounded by her images.
He said the production team wanted the cutouts to look as lifelike as possible. For this, Madhuri’s exact height was measured, and a special photoshoot was organised to capture her in different outfits and looks. The team spent an entire day photographing the actress for the images.
The director added that Aamir Khan had a similar experience when he visited the sets to meet him while shooting at a nearby location.
According to Pilgaonkar, the set lights had not yet been switched on when Aamir spotted one of the cutouts. Mistaking it for Madhuri, the actor waved at it before being told that it was only a cutout.
Pilgaonkar said the team enjoyed creating the images and filming the scenes featuring them.
Released in 1992 and produced by Ashok Ghai, Prem Deewane starred Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Vivek Mushran and Pooja Bhatt. Its music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi.
