Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla has written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeking the introduction of a direct long-distance train service between Amritsar in Punjab and Dhule in Maharashtra. He has also urged the Railway Ministry to develop Dhule as an originating-terminating railway junction and conduct a technical and economic feasibility survey for the proposed service at the earliest.
In his letter dated October 18, Aujla highlighted Amritsar’s religious, historical and commercial significance, noting that devotees from across India and abroad visit Sri Harmandir Sahib. He pointed out that Dhule also holds an important geographical position but has long faced a shortage of direct long-distance interstate rail connections.
Aujla said the lack of a direct train between Amritsar and Dhule creates difficulties for students, working professionals, regular travellers, senior citizens and patients travelling for medical treatment. Passengers often have to depend on road transport to reach railway stations in nearby areas, adding to their travel time and expenses.
The MP said a direct train service would make journeys more convenient for devotees visiting Sri Harmandir Sahib and passengers travelling to religious and cultural destinations in Maharashtra. It would also improve access to educational institutions and industrial centres for students and professionals.
He added that improved railway connectivity could benefit farmers, traders and passengers from rural areas while creating opportunities to strengthen trade links between Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Calling for priority consideration of the proposal, Aujla urged the Railway Minister to direct the Railway Board to undertake a technical and economic feasibility survey, prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and assess the expected passenger traffic.
He also sought an evaluation of the infrastructure required to develop Dhule as an originating-terminating station and called for preliminary engineering work to begin at the earliest.
