Kolkata, October 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

West Bengal witnessed a second police encounter killing on Tuesday after Samiul Sheikh, an accused in the murder of local BJP leader Sujit Mondal, died following a gunfight with Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel in the Samserganj area of Murshidabad district, officials said.

The incident occurred hours after Prahlad Das, an accused in the rape and murder of a minor girl in Gaighata in North 24 Parganas district, was killed in a separate police encounter.

According to police, Sheikh was in the custody of the West Bengal Police’s CID and was taken to the crime scene on Tuesday afternoon for the reconstruction of events related to Mondal’s murder. During the exercise, Sheikh allegedly snatched a firearm from an escorting CID officer and opened fire at police personnel.

The CID officers retaliated, leaving Sheikh critically injured. He was taken to Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“The state CID was investigating the murder of Sujit Mondal. On Tuesday, the accused Samiul Sheikh was taken to the spot to reconstruct the crime scene. At that time, a gun battle took place. After that, the accused was taken to the hospital, where the doctors declared him dead,” an officer from Jangipur Police District in Murshidabad said.

Sujit Mondal, a local BJP leader and resident of the Old Dakbanglo area of Samserganj, went missing on August 28 this year. His dismembered body was subsequently recovered. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had said at the time that Mondal was killed with a meat-cutting knife.

Police later arrested three accused in connection with the murder: Samiul Sheikh, Tajkira Bibi and Johnny Sheikh.

The case also triggered allegations of police negligence. Mondal’s wife, Sumana Mondal, alleged that she had repeatedly approached the local police station after her husband went missing but received no assistance.

The incident led to disciplinary action against several police officials, including suspensions, transfers and departmental inquiries. The Chief Minister had described the alleged lapses as a “major blunder”.

With Sheikh’s death, two accused persons were killed in separate police encounters in West Bengal on Tuesday, according to officials.
