Chandigarh, October 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur has said the state government is committed to securing Scheduled Caste (SC) status for the Nayak community and will forward a proposal to the Government of India after completing the prescribed procedure.

Responding to a question raised by Fazilka MLA S. Narinder Pal Singh Sawna in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, the minister said the process was underway and further action would be taken after receiving detailed reports from the concerned Deputy Commissioners and compiling the required supporting documents.

Dr. Baljit Kaur explained that granting SC status to a community involves a comprehensive assessment of its social, economic, historical and geographical background. The process also examines the community’s social conditions, traditional status and issues relating to social discrimination and untouchability.

She said the state government would proceed on the basis of detailed reports prepared at the Deputy Commissioner level, along with the necessary supporting documents. Once all the reports had been received and the documentation completed, the proposal would be sent to the Government of India for consideration.

The minister further explained that, after the state submits its proposal, the Government of India examines the matter and forwards it to the Registrar General of India (RGI) and subsequently to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes for scrutiny and consideration. A decision on granting SC status is taken after a comprehensive assessment of the community’s social, economic and other relevant circumstances under the prescribed procedure.

Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to social equality and justice, Dr. Baljit Kaur said the state was working to protect the interests of deprived and marginalised communities and ensure that all sections of society could live with dignity.

She said the government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, continued to take steps aimed at promoting social justice and safeguarding the rights of disadvantaged sections.
