Kolkata, October 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
BJP MLA Ratna Debnath, mother of the doctor raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, has called for those responsible for her daughter’s death to face treatment similar to that meted out to Prahlad Das, the accused in the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Gaighata.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Debnath alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government had tried to protect those accused in rape and rape-murder cases. She said she believed the outcome in her daughter’s case could have been different had the current government been in power at the time.
“What is the use of keeping those who commit such heinous acts alive? Encounters are the right thing for them,” Debnath said, expressing the hope that similar action would be taken against her daughter’s perpetrators. She is the BJP legislator from Panihati in North 24 Parganas district.
The body of her daughter, a junior doctor, was found in a seminar room at RG Kar hospital on August 9, 2024. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police, was convicted of the crime and is serving a life sentence.
The remarks followed the death of Das, who was accused of raping and murdering a minor girl in Gaighata last week. He was killed in a police encounter in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to sources familiar with the incident, Das was being taken to the crime scene for reconstruction when he allegedly snatched a police officer’s firearm and opened fire on the escort team. Police personnel retaliated, seriously injuring him. He was taken to a state-run hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
West Bengal Police had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting. The account of the encounter was based on information from sources and had not been confirmed in an official police statement.
