Hazaribagh, October 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Two former Naxalite commanders who surrendered and abandoned violence began a new chapter in their lives on Wednesday, getting married in a ceremony organised at Hazaribagh Open Jail in Jharkhand.
The wedding was facilitated by the Hazaribagh police and district administration as part of an initiative aimed at supporting the rehabilitation and social reintegration of former extremists.
The couple comprises Suresh Singh Munda, a resident of Baruhatu in Bundu, Ranchi district, and Somwari Hembram, who hails from Arahanga in Tamar. Both were serving their sentences at the open jail after surrendering and giving up their involvement in Naxalite activities.
Officials said the couple’s decision to marry was supported by the district administration and police, who arranged the ceremony so they could celebrate the occasion despite the absence of their families.
The wedding was performed according to traditional customs, with fellow inmates participating in the celebrations as members of the wedding procession and offering their blessings to the newlyweds.
Hazaribagh District Marriage Officer Rajesh Ekka also completed the couple’s marriage registration at the venue, providing formal legal recognition to their union.
Police personnel and administrative officials took on the roles normally performed by family members, welcoming the bride and groom according to customary rituals and presenting them with gifts. Senior officials attended the ceremony and wished the couple a peaceful married life.
The initiative highlights the role of rehabilitation measures in helping former Naxalites rebuild their lives after surrendering. Beyond encouraging them to abandon violence, such efforts can help create opportunities for family life, social acceptance and reintegration into the community.
The couple had been undergoing rehabilitation at the open jail after deciding to return to mainstream society under the government’s surrender policy.
