New Delhi, October 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has dismissed as fake viral social media claims suggesting that a new ₹1,000 currency note has been issued or is set to be introduced in India.

The clarification came after posts circulated on platforms such as Instagram, X and Telegram showing people holding a purported yellow-coloured ₹1,000 banknote. Some social media users and content creators claimed that the note had been introduced or would be launched on a specific date.

Rejecting the claims, PIB Fact Check clarified that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made no announcement regarding the issuance of a new ₹1,000 banknote.

In a post on X, the government agency urged citizens to rely on official sources for verification and avoid sharing unverified information online.

“Several social media posts claim that a new Rs 1,000 note has been issued. This claim is fake,” the agency said.

“The RBI has made no announcement regarding the issuance of a new Rs 1,000 note,” PIB Fact Check added.

The clarification aims to counter misinformation triggered by images of the purported banknote, which prompted speculation among social media users. Authorities have advised people to exercise caution when viewing or sharing such content and to report suspicious claims to PIB Fact Check.

Under the RBI’s Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, banknotes in denominations of ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500 are currently in circulation. There has been no official announcement about reintroducing the ₹1,000 denomination.

The earlier ₹1,000 banknote ceased to be legal tender on November 8, 2016, when the government announced the demonetisation of existing ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes as part of efforts to tackle black money, counterfeit currency and corruption.

A redesigned ₹500 banknote was subsequently introduced, but the ₹1,000 denomination was not brought back into circulation. Instead, the RBI introduced ₹2,000 banknotes, which it announced would be withdrawn from circulation in May 2023.
