Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon has condemned the alleged desecration of a statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar at Barian Kalan village in Hoshiarpur and the reported attack on BJP leaders who reached the spot to protest the incident.
Dhillon said the alleged desecration of Ambedkar’s statue was not only an insult to the architect of the Indian Constitution but also an affront to constitutional values and democracy.
He also condemned the reported attack on senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Vijay Sampla and Punjab BJP SC Morcha president Sheetal Angural during the protest at the village.
The incident at Barian Kalan occurred amid a confrontation at the site of the damaged Ambedkar statue. Sampla was reportedly injured during the clash, while police intervened to separate the groups. Police have registered a case against unidentified persons in connection with the alleged vandalism and are examining available video footage to identify those responsible.
Dhillon said the occurrence of another incident involving an Ambedkar statue in Punjab within a week was a matter of serious concern.
He alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab had failed to maintain law and order and protect the religious and social sentiments of people.
“The attack on BJP leaders when they visited the spot to express their protest against the incident is even more condemnable and cannot be tolerated,” Dhillon said.
He demanded that those responsible for the alleged desecration of the statue and the attack on BJP leaders be identified and arrested at the earliest. He also called for strict action against the accused in accordance with law.
