A seventh-semester Mechanical Engineering student of Jabalpur Engineering College (JEC) allegedly died by suicide at a private hostel in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased was identified as Om Pandey, a fourth-year student who was found hanging in his room at a private hostel near Gandhi Vyayamshala in the Ranjhi police station area on Wednesday.
According to police, Pandey was alone in the room when the incident occurred as his two roommates had gone out. When they returned, they found the room locked. After opening it, they discovered Pandey hanging from the ceiling and informed the police.
Ranjhi Police Station in-charge Umesh Golhani said Pandey had allegedly used his shirt to make a noose. No suicide note was recovered from the room, police said.
Preliminary inquiries and information gathered from Pandey’s family indicated that he was considered a promising student. Police said he had developed backlogs in some subjects after falling ill some time ago, and the pending subjects had reportedly become a source of stress.
Investigators are examining whether academic pressure played a role in the incident. However, police said the exact circumstances leading to his death have not yet been established.
Statements of Pandey’s friends, family members and relatives are being recorded to understand the circumstances preceding the incident. Police are also examining his recent academic and personal circumstances as part of the investigation.
His body was sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway.
The incident was reported a day after Engineers’ Day was observed across Madhya Pradesh, including at engineering colleges and other educational institutions.
